<td width="100%">
This is a most beautiful and simply elegant compote in white french opaline glass that was made circa 1850's. The compote is 9" tall and 9-7/8" in diameter with worn gilt trim. The glass is incredible in its translucency, almost smoky white in color. The glass has a bell tone ring when tapped with a finger. The bottom of the hollow bell shaped standard is 5-7/8" in diameter with honest wear marks on the ground and polished bottom. The top rim with its worn gold decoration is also ground and polished. Each piece was hand blown and attached at the bottom of the bowl. I am not sure who made this piece. It could be French or British or even American in origin. The American firm of Boston & Sandwich Glass comes to mind. There are no makers marks and I have not found one like this in any of my reference books. This beautiful fruit bowl weighs almost 3 pound before packing. There are some bubbles and specks of grit in the glass but there are no chips, flakes or cracks of any kind in this mid 19th century object of beauty. Packing for shipping on this item will be double boxed and well wrapped.
