Snow, Warren B. LARGE PROOF CENTS, 1817-1857. AUCTION RECORD AND DATA OVER THE LAST 14 YEARS, 1946-1960. No place of issue, dated November 1, 1960. Original mimeograph in contemporary clasp binder. 8.5 by 11 inch paper. (85) typescript leaves. Fine. [with] Snow, Warren B. PROOF LARGE CENT LISTINGS. No place of issue, last listing dated 1970. Photocopies of original handwritten pages. 8.5 by 11 inch paper. (66) leaves, in 3-ring binder. Fine. The first item is an original mimeograph of this privately distributed work, occasionally seen in photocopy. In the Saunders collection catalogue (Bowers & Merena, November 1987), Dave Bowers provides some background information on this work: "About 30 years ago, one of our clients, Warren Snow, of Binghamton, New York, undertook a study of Proof large cents. His first effort was the review catalogues of principal sales. This went on quite smoothly, until Mr. Snow chanced to see a catalogue issued in the 1950s, describing the cabinet of a well-known large cent collector, and constituting an offering punctuated with a number of Proofs. Some of these Proofs were not Proofs, it turned out, but had polished surfaces or prooflike surfaces. Somewhat disillusioned, Mr. Snow then decided to scrap his review of historical literature, considering it at that point to be rather meaningless, and to proceed by examining collections in person." The second binder would seem to be the earlier work alluded to by Bowers, but it has some entries past the 1950s. Ex Del Bland library.
