LARGE OLD SIDE KNIFE WITH SOUTHERN HISTORY. Early knife with 13-1/8” long blade by 2-3/16” wide at the ricasso and 3/16” thick with flat grind and 1/4” thick flat handguard with tapered tang having bone scales held with two brass rivets. The left side of the blade is marked with a crown and "Sobel”. Left side of the handguard is marked steel and the number "97/3” and another word that is indecipherable. It is accompanied by, what is purported to be, the original bill of sale dated 10 Sept. 1862, written on a simple piece of yellowed paper, in pencil, with a notation "Bill of Sale, 10 Sept. 1862, sold Zed 1 knife bowie, Loyd Zake”, also accompanies is an article from "The Collector” dated Nov./Dec. 1995, dealing with this bowie knife. This knife is alleged to have been carried by someone named Zederia with Quantrell’s Raiders at Lawrence, KS. Zederia’s father Zedidia was allegedly killed by Jay Hawker’s and young Zed went to war at age 16 and later fought in the Spanish American war. This information was, reportedly, told by a 98 year old woman to a younger family member, and that Zed was her great uncle. CONDITION: Good, the blade has been sharpened with a moderate dip in the cutting edge, it has heavy caked rust with several small nicks to the edge, the bone handles are dry and worn but appear to be original to the knife. 4-49211 JR294
