Repousse is a characteristic feature of Northern Thai silver work. There are, however, wide shades of differences in the degree to which any particular design is fashioned. While most bowls made in Bangkok have a flat surfaced pattern, Burmese bowls will show figures which extrude and inch or more from the background design. Chiangmai (Northern Siam) products are generally in between these two extremes. On these bowls scenes are hammered into the silver in high - relief, 'repousse'. Scenes on the silver bowls and boxes usually depict characters and symbolism from the Buddhist Jataka Tales, and scenes from the Indian epic, the Ramayana. Dimension : 250 mm in diameter, 140 mm high, weight is 1130 grams (40 ozs). The base has inscription, which we were told is 100% pure silver, weight 75 Bahts. 1 Baht is equal to 15.1 grams, 75 Bahts would correspond to 1132.5 grams. Excellent condition and workmanship, age unknown, but most likely early 1900's.
