LARGE MULTIPLE FOSSIL FISH PLATE

Diplomystus dentatus, Phareodus sp., Knightia sp.
Eocene
Green River Formation, Wyoming
The 25,000 square mile Green River formation in Wyoming is one of the most abundant and well-preserved sources of freshwater fossils in the world, producing some 19 genera of fish from the Eocene epoch, 35-55 million years ago. Presented here on one matrix are three examples of the more common inhabitants of this prehistoric lake, uncommon in their finely-detailed preparation and superb presentation. The 19½-inch long Diplomystus, with its distinctive upturned mouth, was a relative of the modern-day herring and sardine, and is often found in close proximity to one of its favorite snacks, the small and slender Knightia; dynamically overlapping the larger fossil, the example here measures 7 inches long. Hovering onto the scene is a third fish, an 8-inch long Phareodus with its distinctive dorsal and anal fins, and together the three provide a fine aesthetic picture of the variety of life to be found in these ancient waters. The 32 x 41 inches natural matrix plate comes framed in wood and ready to hang.

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
