LARGE HANDPAINTED ANTIQUE FIBER BOARD SIGN FOR THE

SANDY RIVER RAILROAD, FARMINGTON TO BIGELOW (MAINE). The fiber board sign has been hand lettered to read Sandy River Railroad from Farmington to Bigelow, with bold numbers 1635 and a large signature reading GEO. A. Farrington, beneath it in small letters says GTA. There is some information attached to the sign that says: This sign shows a through ticket origination on a 2ft. gauge Sandy River Railroad in Farmington, Maine with final destination Bigelow, Maine on the two ft. gauge Franklin-Megantic Railroad require a change of trains at Strong, Maine. Service to Bigelow, Maine started in 1900. The Sandy River Railroad was opened November 20, 1879, Farmington to Phillips, Maine in 1908. The Sandy River Railroad merged with the Franklin-Megantic, Phillips, Rangeley, Madrid and Eustis Railroads to form the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad. The Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad was the largest 2ft. gauge railroad in the United States. The last train to run on the railroad was in June, 1935. SIZE: 15 1/2" w x 29 1/2" h. CONDITION: lettering is slightly faded and the sign has some soiling. The manufactured, old barn board sign that currently frames this piece are much weathered. The sign is framed in old weathered barn boards and is generally in good condition. (05-266/JJ). $600-900.
