ALS, "L McLaws", 2pp (single sheet), Nov 23, 1886, 4to, Savannah, excellent content re Antietam. In part, "...I regretted very much that I was unable to...visit the battlefield of Gettysburgh...My lecture was (purported to be) published in the Boston Herald...But there are so many ommissions of importance...that in many cases the meaning is perverted...I will be glad if you will consent to [permit] publication in your paper of a corrected copy...I did not mention the name of the Commander of the Reserve at Sharpsburg [Antietam], but stated that it was understood there was a strong one held by [George] McCelland and observed that if there was one and it has been pushed forward Genl [Robert E] Lee's army would have been lost, - in fact the confederate army was in a most desperate straight, held so I believe because Genl Lee, solely...was aware of Gen McClellan's indisposition to take the offensive, without providing beforehand for a vast number of dangers, which were apparent only to himself & advisors, whoever they were..."
