(LAFAYETTE, MARIE JOSEPH DE)
(1757 - 1834) French statesman and military officer who served as a Major General under Washington and was instrumental in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. A fascinating document from the period of the French Revolution, ordering the arrest of LaFayette by all possible means! The document, 2pp. 4to., in French, is titled: ""Act of the Legislative Body of 19th August 1792, fourth year of liberty...Decree of the National Assembly..."". It reads, in part: ""...The National Assembly, considering that General la Fayette has employed the most odious maneuvers to lead astray the army...[which] he sought to put in a state of revolt...to turn against the country the arms and soldiers of the country...the executive power is expressly charged with promptly executing the present Decree...by all means possible..."". In June of 1792, LaFayette denounced the policies of the Jacobins at the National Assembly, and began formulating a plan to help Louis XVI flee Paris. He was found out, and fled to Belgium, resulting in his incarceration abroad for several years. Fine condition.
