LAFAYETTE, MARIE JOSEPH DE
(1757 - 1834) French statesman and military officer who served as a Major General under Washington and was instrumental in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Fine content L.S. ""Lafayette"" 1p. 4to., Paris, Feb. 16, 1831, a rousing statement in French to ""My dear friends in arms"" written shortly after the Revolution of 1830. In part: ""...The feelings that the National Garde of Chaumone have wanted me to convey have pierced me with an affection and recognition. There is neither destitution nor resignation which can prevent me from being with you continually. Our hearts sympathize all the time together in voicing the accomplishments of the program and of liberty and public order which will be presented in the name of the vainglorious people..."". Lafayette was leader of the National Garde and an enthusiastic supporter of the July 1830 Revolution, but his political indecision in the ensuing months prevented his creation of a longed-for republic. Slight staining to middle of text, not affecting signature, and slight toning edges, else very good.
