These interests led him to photography and photograms in 1922. While Moholy-Nagy experimented with multiples, each of his photograms is unique. Sometimes he would use a photogram as a negative to make a print with reversed tones. There were occasions when he laid an object on the photographic paper in about the same spot to make photograms that have only subtle differences. There are three other photograms that are nearly identical to this one. Two reside in museums and one is in a private collection. This particular photogram was included in the influential exhibition, Film und Foto, that opened in Stuttgart in 1929 and subsequently toured around the world.
