Advertised in 1881 as "Our New Model Three-Barrel Gun", this is a Second Type which has the rifle barrel cocking lever inside the trigger guard, as opposed to the First Type with the cocking lever mounted in front of the trigger guard. The shotgun barrels are 10 gauge with 2 3/4 inch chambers and the bottom barrel is a rifled 44 caliber, and it is equipped with an extractor. These guns are unique in that the front trigger is also used as the break lever. By pushing the trigger forward the barrels are unlocked. The Damascus barrels are fitted with a brass blade front sight and there is a folding ladder style rear sight mounted on the upper tang. The top of the solid rib is marked "L.C. SMITH MAKER OF BAKER GUN SYRACUSE N.Y. STUB TWIST.". The top edge of the frame is marked with the 1877 patent date and the serial number on the opposite side. The matching serial number is also marked on the barrel flat and on the wedge. Brown Twist Damascus pattern barrels, casehardened remaining parts, rebounded locks and mounted with a checkered splinter forearm with steel end cap and smooth swollen round knob pistol grip stock with steel buttplate.

The locks retain 90% original vivid case colors, the frame retains 40% original case colors with a smooth silver gray patina. The trigger guard has a smooth gray patina. The buttplate retains 20% blue finish with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The crude oversize replacement wood has been refinished some time ago and remains very good with some scattered minor dings and dents. The checkering worn, but pronounced. The markings are clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent.
