L. C. Barrow Autograph Letter Signed to Blanche
L. C. Barrow Autograph Letter Signed to Blanche Barrow. Two pages, 8.5" x 10", lined paper, Huntsville, Texas, March 8, 1938, to Blanche Barrow, original mailing envelope present. L. C. (by most accounts, his legal given name) was the brother of Clyde Barrow as well as Buck Barrrow, Blanche's late husband. Barrow writes to Blanche, who is still in prison: "No doubt it will be a surprise to hear from me after all these year's and I sincerely hope it will be a pleasant one. Of course I have thought of you often...I am in a lot better position now than I was then my job here expires in August..." He was writing this letter from a box number in Huntsville, could this "job" be a prison term? Continuing: "... really you wouldn't know me I have changed so much. How is your health? and has your eyes ever got well? I so hope they have more than anything else in the world I want you to be well and happy..." This is a reference to the eye injury Blanche received at the Platte City shootout. L. C. goes on, likely speaking of his late brother: "...that is what he would wish so keep that pretty little head of yours up and think of the future it can't be much longer..." He then mentions that he is turning 29 soon: "...I still have my freckles they seem to stay with me better than my youth..." He closes by saying that he would like to see her again and exhorts her to answer his letter soon.

Interestingly, it was L. C. who indirectly brought the F.B.I. (then the Bureau of Investigation) in on the Bonnie & Clyde / Barrow Gang case. In late 1932, a Ford car that had been stolen in Pawhuska, Oklahoma was found abandoned in Jackson, Michigan. Another Ford that had been stolen in Illinois was found in Pawhuska. In searching that car, the authorities found that a man and a woman had driven the car. They also discovered a prescription bottle in the car that they tracked to a Nacogdoches, Texas drug store where it had been filled for Clyde Barrow's aunt. Investigating that lead, they discovered that Bonnie, Clyde, and L. C had recently visited the woman. It was then shown that L. C. Barrow had obtained the prescription bottle from a son of the women to whom it belonged. Based on this evidence, a warrant was issued against Bonnie & Clyde for interstate transportation of the stolen (Illinois) Ford car between Texas and Oklahoma. The F.B.I. then started its national manhunt for the pair. The letter is in fine condition with original mailing folds, one with a partial separation likely caused by the original opening of the letter.
