Since practically the entire extant stock of 1931 double eagles falls into the Mint State grades, it is plain to see that this issue was never freed for broad circulation. Most of the 2,938,250 pieces minted were melted at the Mint and today the 1931 is similar in overall rarity to the highly valued 1932. This is a swirling gem Uncirculated example, flashy and decidedly beautiful!

Among Saint-Gaudens pieces, the 1931 is deemed to be one of the top seven rarest issues in the series, with few examples extant after the mass meltings of the Roosevelt Administration in the period following 1937. The population figures by the major grading companies can be misleading as to rarity since the same coin may have been submitted to both services numerous times, or even the same service multiple times thus causing the population figures to be distorted.
