[L#5402] 1907 HR $20 Flat NGC PF64
America's most beautiful coin and one of the most strikingly original coins ever created by any mint in the modern era. Designed by America's premier sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and struck in the year he died, the small issue of High Reliefs are legendary. Tangled in bureaucratic meddling, with a an enemy of the artist's supervising this project at the Mint, Saint-Gaudens still managed to bring his genius to life in these coins. With the help of President Theodore Roosevelt, the largest available coining presses were used to mint these majestic coins. The depth of the relief required multiple blows from the largest coining presses to bring up the design, with each coin having to be struck three, five or sometimes even seven times to finally fill the dies with enough gold to show the minutest details of the design.

This particular coin shows medallic details expected for a Proof, with the color an even yellow-gold throughout. Close examination will find a few trivial hairlines and signs of handling, but this one is far nicer than most examples. NGC has graded only three examples with the Flat Rim as proofs, two as Proof 64 and one Proof 66. Needless to say, this is a very remarkable coin and one that will certainly excite the advanced numismatist. Most of the other proofs graded by NGC are the Wire Rim variety. An American classic!
