[L#5398] 1907 High Relief $20 NGC MS64
Countless millions of words have been written about the famed MCMVII High Relief double eagle, and we can appreciate that. However, we would be remiss if we didn't at least give a brief sketch of this coin's extraordinary depth of detail and golden iridescence. Clear-cut devices point to it having been giving a full strike by the dies, in fact, if the historical accounts are accurate, the 11,250 or so pieces struck on the mint's hydraulic Medal press each required between 3 and 5 blows by the dies to bring forth the design! And what a marvelous design it is: Liberty's strides forward holding a torch of Liberty in one hand and an olive branch of peace in the other. Under her foot, a rocky outcrop; behind, the rays of the dawning sun; and further off to the left, a tiny rendition of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. This version of a standing Liberty was created by America's foremost sculptor at the time, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. His equally marvelous eagle flies across the reverse. He modeled it upon Longacre's flying eagle cent motif. And what a balanced composition it is - again, with the sun peeking up from the lower rim, its numerous rays streaking out behind the eagle as it soars. What a soaring testament to coinage art this is, and in a grand state of preservation: NGC Mint State 64!
