[L#5218] 1809/8 $5 PCGS MS64
We are pleased to offer an 1809 half eagle that has just about everything: pleasing sharp strike, deep frosty luster with a hint of orange gold toning, unimprovable planchet, and sharp eye appeal. Of course, the overdate lends interest as well. It is a great treat for us to contemplate the superb striking and eye appeal that characterize such a coin. Although many collections of early $5 gold have crossed the block over the years, most high-grade examples fade into the background in comparison to this 1809, a coin in which true quality stands in the forefront. The knowing buyer will appreciate the aspect of a coin "with everything," as here, versus an example that may have a high grading number but little else of note. This creates a wonderful opportunity.

The Breen 6458 overdate is the only die variety known for this year. This specimen employs a leftover reverse die from 1808. Nowhere near as plentiful in choice Mint State grades as the population figures would indicate! Due to numerous resubmissions for a higher grade, these figures have lesser importance to collectors who want a coin such as this. In terms of its historical angle, the Capped Bust to left, style of 1807-1812 was designed by John Reich. His half eagle motif was somewhat reminiscent of that used on the half dollar of the period: Reverse with perched eagle, inscriptions, motto and denomination, etc. (The coin comes to us in PCGS holder #50183176.)
