[L#5204] 1804 Sm 8 $5 PCGS MS64
PCGS lists this as "small 8" while the Breen reference refers to it as having a "small date." Whatever your preference, you'll immediately come to see why the MS64 grade was assigned. For the coin is, without question, fresh, original, frosty and admirably well-preserved for so early a gold coin. The mint struck approximately 30,476 pieces with the 1804 date comprising of several varieties, including one with a blundered obverse having a small 8 over a much larger 8. This example of the small 8 variety has localized weakness but is otherwise complete in the stars, major hair and cap detail, and eagle definition, with lovely patina atop the greenish golden frost. Sandwiched between two more plentiful issues of 1803 and 1805, the 1804 has long been one of our favorite dates to recommend to advanced collectors. The coin is housed in PCGS holder 5645680. PCGS Population: 3; none finer.
