[L#5130] 1829 $2 1/2 NGC MS62
Due to wholesale melting, as with other early gold issues, virtually the entire mintage of 1829 was wiped out. A handful survive, but the coins are truly rare and seldom offered. The original mintage of 3,403 pieces is likely represented by not more than 100 or so survivors today. The original design was by Robert Scot, who was copying the head device from the half eagles. 1829 is the first year of issue for the modified "reduced size" type that ran through 1834, with the changes made by William Kneass, and utilizing new mint equipment and the closed collar process. This resulted in smaller beads at the perimeter and a full rim on both sides. A nice yellow golden luster shoots from this coin. Full, bold transfer from the die to planchet seen in the stars, the hair, and the cap, although with extensive small field abrasions on either side limiting the grade to MS62.
