[L#5087] 1861-D G$1 NGC AUJ58
A bright and lustrous pale yellow gold specimen with distinctive frosty highlights. The fields are satiny and leaning ever so slightly toward prooflike in a few places, and the satiny surfaces are essentially devoid of marks of serious consequence. Further, the strike is rather sharp for 1861-D and bold in all key areas save for a touch of rub on the high points, virtually all of the design elements are clearly represented. Two pairs of dies were shipped to Dahlonega on December 10, 1860 for the 1861 gold dollar production, arriving January 7 of 1861. No gold dollars were coined under Union auspices, however. In April 1861, after the Confederacy seized the Dahlonega Mint, rebel authorities coined an unknown quantity of gold collars using an obverse of 1860 and one of the 2 new reverse. Always seen with U in UNITED weak; ICA often weak as seen here. However, this particular AU58 has sharper details on the feather plumes than most with a clear LIBERTY on the headband. Only a few Mint States survive and even About Uncirculated examples are very rare.
