This year's entire mintage of 1,000-1,500 pieces was produced in May 1861 under the government of the Confederate States of America. While it is deservedly the most eminent and sought-after gold dollar from the Dahlonega Mint, the 1861-D is also the rarest D-mint issue in the gold dollar series. Author and researcher Douglas Winter estimates that between 50-55 pieces are in existence in all grades, with only about 20 of these falling into the About Uncirculated grade. Although to some extent mellowed on the reverse, the present survivor shows flushes of luster in the fields and elsewhere about, within, and upon the obverse devices. The color is a mix between olive-gold and honey-gold shades. While the strike is typically irregular for the issue, all letters are discernible in the legend and the inner devices are quite distinct. Smooth and injury free for the grade, this is an important coin from both a numismatic as well as an historical viewpoint.
