[L#4510] 1887-O $1 NGC Specimen 65 Ex Carter
Only four semi-official branch mint Proofs in the Morgan Dollar series share this classification: 1879-O, 1883-O, 1893-CC and 1921-S. While mint records are silent on any Proof or specimen strike for 1887 at the New Orleans mint, the coin itself displays striking characteristics often associated with such pieces, such as extra bold relief, very sharp rim dentils, and classic frosted cameo relief on the main devices (Liberty, eagle, etc.). Now it may be this was the first coin off of brand new dies and so was specially made and preserved at the time for an occasion now lost to history. Whatever its source, the coin is amazing to ponder with its delightful overlay of gold to antique steel and blue toning. Housed in NGC holder 635849-001 with reference to the Carter collection incorporated into the grade description.
