Clean surfaces on both sides, but "uncleaned" in the sense that it has very attractive natural old-silver gray fields with slightly lighter "rubbed silver" look on the high points - all of which indicate to us a coin put aside decades ago. That it will become part of another first-rate collection of early silver dollar, no one can deny. In the year 1800, a hotly contested presidential election cycle turned out the Adams administration (with his Federalist backers in the congress) and replaced it with the Anti-Federalist faction of supporters of Thomas Jefferson.

At different points in early U.S. history, New York and Philadelphia (where this silver dollar was minted) served as the nation's capital. Then, in 1790, the U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of a permanent capital on federal land. That land would become the District of Columbia, honoring Christopher Columbus. President George Washington selected the site personally in the District where the capital city -- that would eventually bear his name -- would be built.
