[L#4162] 1798 HE $1 NGC EF45
One of several very attractive early bust dollars consigned to the sale, this well centered, damage-free specimen from 1798 offers the viewer medium gray color with lighter "rubbed silver" highlights that have somewhat of a faint golden brown hue and are all original, uncleaned, virtually mark-free. Rims, too, are in excellent shape for a design that often is found nicked on the edges due to its large size and heavy silver content. The year 1798 was a troubling one in the new American nation. Activist president John Adams, on hearing much too much criticism of his administration and policies, shoved through congress two horrific Acts, the Alien and Sedition acts, that, for a time, almost caused civil war to break out between the warring political factions in the country. It wasn't until he left office after a single term (1800) that these proclamations went into abeyance. So this silver dollar, which came out that year, becomes a part of our nation's heritage, an artifact of a time now more than two centuries ago.
