[L#4144] 1776 Continental $1 CURRENCY NGC MS64
Abundant bright silver gray shines with some less frenetic medium gray as accents. Lots of luster and mint sparkle remains, and the eye appeal is outstanding. The surfaces are free of marks and abrasions, and the beaded dentils are all well-defined. A spot of corrosion is noted in the sun rays of the obverse, a common occurrence on this mostly tin issue. Indeed, it is a wonder when a piece does not show any evidence of "tin pest" or corrosion!

This lovely Mint State specimen is an excellent example of America's famous and historic Revolutionary War emergency coinage, one every collector of early American coins wishes to own and a type that belongs in collections of colonial coins or early dollars. Low-grade pieces, despite the number of people who would like to find a coin in middle circulated grades, are rather elusive -- most Continental Dollars, it seems, never circulated enough to become worn, evidence that this currency never found wide circulation channels. The result, for a modern collector, is that Mint State pieces are the best way to rope in a Continental dollar for your collection, as they appear with greater frequency and represent a better value than a rarer worn. The price of Continental dollars continues to escalate, of course, with increased collector interest and ever-expanding inflationary prices, and we have yet to see an extensive time in the market that they have not been avidly sought (nor do we expect to).

This remarkable specimen from the Alto group is very conservatively graded; we have viewed several Mint State 65s not as choice as this example. It is truly a special coin!
