[L#3549] 1837 RE 50c NGC MS66
An incredible finery of luster dresses smooth pastel gold and neutral gray highlights. Nicely struck, as one should expect given NGC's assessment of its quality. We point with pride to its full accompaniment of hair curls, sharp drapery folds, sharp cap, and even to the detail in the little clasp that keep's Liberty's modesty in check at the shoulder.

This classic American coinage issue marked the beginning of a new era in coinage with the implementation of the first steam-powered coinage press at the Philadelphia Mint. Approximately 1,200 examples of this reeded edge half dollar were produced 1836, the regular production coins minted from this press throughout 1837. From a industrial viewpoint, this new press afforded an important advance for the Mint. The uniformity of coinage reached a higher level than ever before with this Reeded Edge coinage. What's more, the equipment's precision achieved many objectives, one of these being a decline in forgeries, as those in that line were unable to obtain such precision. (The coining press that struck these coins is now on display at the museum of the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs, Colorado.)
