Both the peripheries and the central areas are impressive for their sharpness of strike, and the frosty textured surfaces are glistening under a light overlay of hazy toning. No deviation in the sharp relief seen, except for the stars which are flat; full relief details throughout in the centers of the coin.

This is one of the shortest-lived types in the entire Seated Quarter series of 1838-91. Examples without extra drapery folds at Liberty's elbow were delivered solely in 1838 and 1839 at the Philadelphia Mint, with a single 1840-dated delivery from New Orleans. This No Drapery design differs from the following Drapery design in other regards, mainly noticeable in the proportions of Liberty's figure and the size of the rock upon which she is seated. The first-year 1838 has a reported mintage of 466,000 pieces.
