[L#3400] 1815 25C NGC MS62
Attractive deep steel to gunmetal toning with iridescence and copious amounts of underlying frost. Perhaps the tarnish streak (from an impurity in the metal) that occurs near the front part of the bust limited the grade to MS62 and not something higher by a point or two. Be that as it may, this is a scarce, early Bust Quarter.

During the years 1812 to 1815, the War of 1812 was the big news in America, with British ships and troops disrupting the brittle American economy which depended on trade with England and Europe for much of its commerce. Silver was hoarded and the mintage for 1815 quarters was only 89,235. Curiously, no quarters had been issued since 1807 when the draped bust pieces were last coined, as the Philadelphia Mint focused their production on copper coins, half dollars and half eagles.

Many 1815 quarters were actually delivered on January 10, 1816, shortly before a fire broke out on the premises, which would delay further production of most coins until late 1817. Perhaps this handsome specimen was in that last delivery; it somehow survived the generations, coming to us now in this attractive condition.
