An impressive gem in all regards. The satiny devices are ablaze with icy white luster, the strike is sharp, so sharp in fact you'll be amazed, while the eye appeal of the perfect deep mirrors is nothing short of extraordinary. This is the first year of a new design. This is also a one-year Type in which the mint failed to include the denomination CENTS on the reverse. This is a year some suppose to be "available" at any time in Gem Proof. But when a collector actually attempts to acquire an ultra cameo Gem Proof, the reality sets in. Don't let it pass you by.

In 1883 the Mint restyled the nickel five-cent piece, using on the obverse a head of Miss Liberty said to have been inspired by the ancient goddess Diana (no relation to the British princess), and similar to the motif used on certain pattern coinage since 1881. The reverse bore the denomination emblazoned simply as the Roman numeral V, within a wreath, a concept that seemed to be perfectly fine, for nickel three-cent pieces had III on the reverse since 1865, trimes had used III from 1851 through 1873 (at which time the denomination was discontinued), and on various patterns of the Liberty Head design in the values of cent, three cents, and five cents Roman numerals I, III, and V had been used without comment. Things came a-cropper shortly after the coins went into production, however.
