This cent displays smooth medium brown surface with areas of slightly deeper brown to purplish brown color attending the legends and within portions of the eagle's body and wings. Minor strike softness occurs on the head and beak, the curve of the wing above the head, and likewise along the end of the tail, all a consequence of the minor design flaw that has the eagle crossing portions of the wreath when the dies are aligned in normal "coin" alignment. This flaw in the design may have been the unfortunate reason the mint chose to switch to the Indian head obverse beginning in 1859, abandoning what many consider to be one of America's most authentic and original coin designs. Always rare, always under intense pressure from collectors, and seldom available with this coin's attractive carbon-free quality, you cannot go wrong with an 1856 Flying Eagle cent!
