[L#1376] 1800 L1C S-198 R5+ G6. Clipped Planchet.
Sharpness F12 but the fields were skillfully abraded to reduce microscopic granularity. No verdigris, and the surfaces now appear smooth to the unaided eye. A glass reveals some extremely fine roughness remaining on both sides, and there are some very light scratches along the dentils under the date and very dull ones around TES OF AM as well. Nicely retoned glossy dark olive brown with chocolate toning on the highpoints, the obverse with some mottled mix of the tones in the fields as well. There is a small curved planchet clip that affects the dentils at LI and over the U in UNITED, as struck. EDS. The date and legends remain strong and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent for the grade in spite of the defects. Called net G6 and tied for CC#9 in the Bland census. Noyes says net G5 and tied for CC#13, his photo # ANS375. This cent was the plate coin for the variety in the Clapp-Newcomb book on the cents of 1795, 1796, 1797, and 1800. In addition, it comes with an important history.
