[L#1257] 1796 L1C S-103 R4+ VF20. LIHERTY Obv
Slightly sharper but the rim over D-STATES-O has been lightly smoothed. In addition, there is a depression at the first T in STATES and another at the dentil tips over the second S, and these areas have been lightly tooled as well. It appears these depressions may have resulted from an incomplete planchet, and someone tried to "help" an otherwise very nice cent. The obverse is smooth and choice except for a few tiny nicks on the neck and a tiny pitmark at the top of the 7. Glossy olive brown and chocolate. The date and legends are bold and the LIHERTY error is very strong. E-MDS, Breen state II. Called net VF20 and tied for CC#9 in the Bland census. Noyes also says tied for CC#9 but calls the sharpness VF30 with a net of F12, his photo #25562. Either way this is a nice example of a very tough die variety.
