Middle year of the Proof pieces of this design and one of the most resplendent coins of its denomination. Fine sandblast or matte Proof finish virtually perfect, the texture on 1912 is heavier than 1913-14 with tan to brownish hints over the natural gold color, and minutely lighter than the 1911, the microscopic uniform granularity showing bright facets. A partial reverse knife-rim. Nevertheless, amongst the finest known! (In NGC holder 1633981-002.)

Trompeter's in NGC Proof 67 was comparable to this, and among the best of the dozen or two survivors of only 83 made. For some reason, the 1912 date is the rarest of the Indian head series. Its only competitor is 1915. Only one was offered at auction between 1954 and 1979! These are some of the recent auction records known to us:
