The otherwise bright-gold color yields to warmer golden-orange hues toward in areas on this incredibly detailed specimen. Struck with scientific exactness throughout the design, as is noteworthy on these razor-sharp Proofs, all design elements were completed from twice the usual number of blows from the die. Furthermore, unlike business strike $20 gold pieces which were manufactured assembly line fashion on electrically operated equipment at the mint, Philadelphia employed its lower tech but more force-driven hydraulic medal press when striking Proofs. And it shows. The coin is amazing for its detail. The surfaces were given a fine satin, almost "Roman" finish for 1910. Later dates, 1911-15 have a duller more textured sandblast or matte finish.
