[L#1131] 1907 $20 HR WIRE ED N MS64
Housed in an early style NGC holder, this coin has rock solid credentials as a first-class coin whose surface and sharp detail lies just shy of gem MS65 quality. Since each High Relief $20 required up to 5 blows by the special coining dies (these were struck on the mint's high-powered hydraulic medal press) it goes without saying the devices are razor-sharp. A beautiful specimen.

As was true of the 1907 Indian designs for the Eagle, the present piece was the result of Theodore Roosevelt's orchestration with Augustus Saint-Gaudens, America's foremost sculptor at the time. It was originally proposed that the entire spectrum of American coinage would be redesigned, from the lowly One-cent piece through the Double Eagle. In correspondence, Augustus Saint-Gaudens felt that the 1857 Flying Eagle Cent was the finest motif found on any American coin. It is interesting to note that this same flying eagle turned up on the Double Eagle offered here.
