Philadelphia Mint Eagles (and some Double Eagles) struck in the period 1887 to 1890 are generally very scarce due to low production at the Philadelphia Mint. The low production traces to a banking and gold market panic then gripping the East Coast money centers. The panic developed when a large English banking firm, Barings, defaulted and went into receivership causing a European run on gold. Barings would later rise from the ashes like the Phoenix bird, only to blow apart once more in a derivatives disaster in the 1990s! So even though this lustrous 1890 $10 gold coin is a silent artifact of the past, knowing the tumultuous history of that past helps give the buyer of the coin a better perspective.
