[L#1064] 1801 $10 N MS62
This is a pleasing, nicely lustrous coin with a few grade-limiting hairlines in the otherwise smooth prooflike field. What can we say about the devices but that they are razor-sharp throughout. This includes the stars on the obverse, the stars on the reverse, Liberty's hair, her cap and drapery folds, plus the eagle. And what a sparkling eagle to find: bold shield, bold neck and wing detail, and no adjustment marks of any kind besmirching the surface. A choice early gold coin struck during the first full year in office of Thomas Jefferson, third American president.

The peak of production for the early $10 design occurs this year, when 44,344 1801 capped bust eagles were struck. Two varieties are known, with one obverse die bearing a Close Date and another obverse bearing a Wide Date. Although eagles were delivered well into 1802, that year's production is believed to have been from 1801 dies. No 1802 capped bust eagles exist.
