[L#1040] 1812 L1C S-290 R1 PCGS MS65 RB
Frosty bluish steel brown with lots of faded mint red remaining in the protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are covered with satiny luster that extends to even the highest points of the design. Virtually pristine, the only marks being a tiny tick or planchet flake in the field off the tip of the nose and a faint area of slightly darker steel toning between stars 11 and 12, plus a tiny nick off the stem tip. There is a very shallow depression at the dentil tips from the top of the obverse around to star 9, as struck. M-LDS, Breen state III. Struck slightly off center to K-5, and the stars on the right side of the obverse are softly struck, as usual. A fabulous Turban Head cent, tied for finest known honors with another example impounded in the British Museum. Called MS65 and tied for CC#1 with the museum example in the Noyes and Breen/Bland census lists, Noyes photo #20466. While the luster might be a little subdued for the MS65 grade, this is still a very choice cent. Not only is this cent the finest example of the variety outside a museum, it is the finest example of the date, regardless of die variety. Worthy of the finest cabinet, whether collecting by variety or date.
