[L#1032] 1807 L1C S-271 R1 MS62. Comet Obverse.
Glossy golden brown and tan with underlying frosty luster covering the fields and protected areas. The satiny mint luster is somewhat subdued by a thin layer of natural oxidation, but the surfaces are virtually flawless. The only marks, and all are trivial, are a speck of slightly darker toning in the field close over the bust tip (which can be used to match this cent to the S-271 pictured on the cover of the famous Helfenstein sale catalog), a very tiny tick high on the shoulder near the hair, and a very faint, thin scuff from the base of the second T in STATES to the leaf over the E in ONE. M-LDS, Breen state VII. Called MS63 and CC#1 in the Bland/Breen census. Noyes also says MS63 and has this cent the stand-alone finest of the variety (his photo #28160). A bath and proper brushing to remove the layer of oxidation and uncover more of the mint luster below should improve the grade, but this is a spectacular (and famous) cent as is.
