[L#0999] 1911-D $2.50 NGC MS65
A coin featuring bold devices, an equally sharp, clear mintmark (very desirable) and splendid color. The nice flow of golden frost from center to periphery has acquired natural orange toning through the years. This, as every advanced collector knows, is the key date in the set. Only 15 Indian $2.50 gold pieces comprise the 1908-1929 series, but only one has minuscule mintage, great rarity in Gem MS65 quality, and high preference among collectors, and this is it! Mintage just slightly over 55,000 pieces! Most survivors grade Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated.

The unusual design of the Indian quarter eagle was described by mint officials as "recessed relief" -- differing somewhat from true intaglio, the actual raised features of the Indian and eagle were set below the surface of the planchet, with the flat surface becoming, in effect, a broad protecting rim!
