[L#0975] 1855-D $2.50 PCGS MS60
A landmark issue in this coveted series of coins, the Dahlonega branch mint struck a mere 1,123 quarter eagles for 1855, with no more than a few dozen survivors, typically in well circulated grades. The fields on this specimen are very clean for the issue, somewhat muted and matte like but generally well above average. Devices unfold this way: Liberty, almost pristine; the eagle, marred by four noticeable but not too unattractive marks. Centers are about usual for the mint, weak on the central part of the eagle, but uniquely well struck on most of Liberty's hair and coronet areas. The rim denticles indifferently struck. Were it not or the almost-impossible 1854-D issue from this branch, the 1855 would be the most talked about date in the group. As it is, the 1855-D ranks among the most elusive issues of them all.
