Shows a little original toning color over very frosty surfaces. Middling to better than average detail at centers (it is the 1928-S that often has a miserable strike). This date is doubly popular because mintage was so low.

Production of Philadelphia Mint 1928 Dollars declined markedly over what it had been in 1927 and prior years. This may partially be explained by the fact that, after 1921, the Treasury was required to replace all 270 million Morgan Dollars melted under the terms of the Pittman Act of 1918. By 1928 this order had been met. Mint officials, who were never happy with the politically motivated issuance of large numbers of Silver Dollars anyway, happily ceased production as soon as they were able. Hence, only 360,649 1928 Peace Dollars were made. Production did not begin again until 1934 (under terms of a new enactment).
