[L#0908] 1921 Zerbe $1 PCGS PF64
Named after the famous early 20th century collector who bugged the mint to strike him a small number of "special" silver dollars in 1921. Farran Zerbe was primarily responsible for getting the government to open a coin exhibit at the San Francisco Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915. When he heard that a competing coin dealer, Chapman, had gotten special Proofs made for him by George T. Morgan of the Mint, Zerbe claimed his "me too" rights, and thus were struck-off (clandestinely it seems) an unknown but obviously small number of Proofs. This glittering specimen possesses a wealth of detail underneath natural light golden with gray patina. On the reverse, a small tarnish streak traces to impurity in the metal and is a feature of the actual striking.
