[L#0884] 1903-S $1 PCGS MS66
An absolutely pristine cheek on Liberty goes with other beautiful attributes. The fresh white luster on both sides is full with a somewhat satin texture normally seen on dates in the twentieth century. Fully struck in all areas with pinpoint detailing on the tips of the hair waves and the topmost feathers on the eagle's breast. This has the normal-size mintmark for 1903-S.

Silver coins designed prior to 1916 were struck from basined dies, which can produced a pronounced prooflike effect when new. Since the 1921 Morgan dollar was similar to the design used up until 1904, it was also struck from basined dies. Thus, there are prooflike 1921 Morgans. However, there are relatively few prooflike 1921-D and 1921-S Morgans. At some point in 1921 the mints at Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco probably discarded the basining step of the die. For the Morgan design this resulted in less than optimum striking of the coin as evidenced by many 1921-D and 1921-S with weakly struck wreath and other details. All three mints operated at full capacity in 1921 to replace the silver dollars melted in 1918 and 1919 under the Pittman Act. So production short-cuts were apparently taken to achieve the highest possible production, according to Van Allen & Mallis in their book Morgan and Peace Dollars.
