[L#0860] 1901 $1 PCGS MS64
A reasonable strike, with weakness to the upper hair curls as often seen, and less definition on the eagle's breast than in pre-1900 years. The color ranges from silvery to natural light toned-brown. A lustrous and nicely preserved choice 1901. Both dies were somewhat worn when this dollar was struck. Scarce in all Uncirculated grades, the 1901 becomes particularly difficult to locate above the Mint State 60-61 threshold for some reason, despite a reasonable large mintage.

Of all Philadelphia Mint business strike dollars, excepting the spectral 1895, the 1901 is the rarest in Mint State. Probably, many were placed into circulation at or near the time of issue. Those that were not, probably were melted under the Pittman Act of 1918.

Over the years, very few choice Mint State 1901 dollars have appeared in auctions. Those that did in early sales were not recognized for their rarity. While specimens remain in MS60 to 62 grades to the extent of an estimated 750 to 1,500 pieces, at higher levels the 1901 dollar is a major rarity. Bowers estimates just 10 to 20 in Mint State-64, and possibly, only 2 to 4 in Mint State-65.
