A sharp impression was left by the recoil of the dies that struck this handsome prooflike example. A bright, untoned coin radiating mint glow on gorgeous silver surfaces. The radiance of the frost on Liberty's face is genuinely striking and uncharacteristically fresh.

The Carson City Mint suffered a number of tribulations in its 24-year career. One such was an abrupt closure of the facility when President Grover Cleveland took office for his first term in office in 1885. He was a penny pincher who saw no reason to fund what he considered to be a superfluous second Mint in the Western part of the country. That is why there are no 1886-CC, 1887-CC or 1888-CC dollars minted. Cleveland left office in January 1889 and lo and behold, the new administration reopened the mint for a short reprieve, from 1889-1893.
