[L#0591] 1879-CC Perfect Mintmark PCGS MS65
This dramatic Gem Uncirculated specimen of the desirable CC-mint issue boasts striking depth almost impossible to find on a dollar of this issue. Furthermore, the surface has acquired a band of very deep "antique silver" hues along a portion of the obverse (as shown) revealing near perfect silvery to pearl-white radiance elsewhere. The few tiny bagmarks are so slight they require no further mention, while everything positive can be said about the piece, and then some. (Because the coin is in an early generation PCGS holder, the tag fails to make mention of the fact this has the preferred "perfect mintmark" instead of the slightly discounted variety in which the CC appears as a jumble of letters, the so-called "capped die" variety.)

Only through the 1950s were 1879-CC dollars always available from dealers (for a price), but they were difficult to find in quantity other than bagmarked MS60. The Redfield hoard, first marketed in 1976, is said to have had 400 to 500 pieces of the "Capped" variety, nearly all of which were in lower grades and heavily bagmarked. The 1879-CC is by far the scarcest Carson City Morgan dollar of the early, 1878-85 date range. All are of the Third Reverse which has a slanted top arrow feather, convex breast on the eagle. The ownership of a gemmy 1879-CC dollar has always been a point of pride and accomplishment for the advanced collector of the series.
