Fully struck and brilliant with exceptionally clean surfaces. The only mark of any note is a small one on Liberty's cheek. Reference to "weak" on the grading holder has nothing to do with the strike characteristics of this decidedly well struck Gem. Instead, the reverse 7/8 tail feathers die is one of many in which the underlying 8 feathers show their faintest tips only. This being the first year of issue for a new design, the mint experimented continually with the proper placement of devices and other minute variations from one die to the next. It wasn't until about 1880 that Philadelphia Mint finally established a working combination of an acceptable obverse with what came to be known (by modern-day collectors) as the "Reverse of 1879". All 1878 7/8 Tail Feathers dollars, by the way, come with a standard "Reverse of 1878" in which the eagle's breast is on a flatter plane than in post-1878 varieties. Scarce this sharp!
