[L#0540] 1802 $1 NGC MS62
Extra boldness seen throughout Liberty's hair and ribbon, with complete separation of the hair strands behind her temple and cascading in numerous curls down the neck. Mottled dove-gray patina over both surfaces with sparking gold accents throughout, the evenly distributed color has no glaring imperfections or anomalies. The underlying luster shines through this coat of toning in muted but agreeable ways. (Housed in NGC holder 1825366-010.)

The Draped Bust dollar obverse was designed by noted artist Gilbert Stuart in an attempt to elevate U.S. coinage designs to "world class" stature. This design inaugurated a maturing of the "young" Liberty of the preceding Flowing Hair issue to a more "matronly" form of emblematic national symbol. In 1798, the young eagle seen on the reverse of the earlier dollar was replaced with an older and iconographic eagle based on the Great Seal of the United States, one that was more in keeping with heraldic metaphors so popular in those days.
