A superlative toned example of this key issue, and technically superior to many others in this nominal grade. Well struck, frosty surfaces are enwrapped in antique-gray of the most attractive appearance. The legends are fully struck including the tops of the letters which, on later issues, tend to stretch towards the rim for some reason. The lowest mintage Mercury Dime issue, the 1916-D earns the title of the undisputed key to a date and mintmark collection.

Both the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints coined fairly large quantities of the new dimes during the first months of 1916. The output of the Denver Mint was curtailed, as that facility struggled to meet an extreme demand for quarter dollars.
