[L#0131] 1909-S V.D.B. 1c PCGS MS65 Red
Well struck through and through with sharp beard on Lincoln, full coat lapel and an especially deep strike on the wheat ears. Even the O in ONE is razor-sharp. The underlying coppery gold luster is free from contact marks or other signs of deterioration. A difficult issue to find at the MS65 level, especially with full red luminescence.

The entire mintage of 309,000 Indian Cents dated 1909-S, was executed in January. Why no additional ones were coined is unknown, but the Lincoln dies were not ready until June. Like its Philadelphia Mint cousin, 1909-S V.D.B. is usually well struck. The Holy Grail for Lincoln Cent collectors, the acquisition of a 1909-S V.D.B. cent usually marks the completion of this series. While a number of other issues are rarer in Mint State, this coveted coin remains the most famous regular-issue entry in terms of the total number available in all grades. For many years it has also been the most widely known outside of the numismatic community.
